Naval Impact
One impact that all branches have is the use of harmful chemicals and oil. These harmful chemicals can killed the environments' soil and ground. However in the case of the Navy, it would be the ocean or water that they are in danger. Naval vessels cary a heavy potential for oil risks, such as oil spills. Currently the Navy has over 11 Air Craft Carriers and over 75 submarines that are nuclear powered. If these naval vessels properly maintained, they carry serious threats toward the ocean life. The Nimitz class Air craft carriers are powered by two A4W nuclear reactors. If such an event would occur onboard, the nuclear waste could seep into the sea, and mutate the ocean life.
Space onboard naval ships are tight. There is not enough room for storage. This unfortunately leads the sailors being forced to throw their trash waste overboard. The travels between port to port are too far for the Navy to hold their trash. Once the trash is thrown overboard, the trash moves into a swirl of trash called trash Islands or trash gyres. This leads to the possibility of sea life being caught in the trash or die from eating what looks like a prey. |
